Acne Causes Information

Acne is a common occurrence at puberty. With the increased production of sex hormones, the sebaceous glands become hyperactive.

Androgen and progesterone are responsible for the hyperplasia of the oil glands.

Eunuchs do not have oily skins, nor do they suffer from acne but testosterone given to castrates may produce acne lesions.

The usual premenstrual flare-up is explained by some observers as occurring during the period when the normal androgen-estrogen balance in the blood is altered in favor of androgen. Hence hormonal imbalance is held responsible for causing acne.

Besides seborrhoeic diathesis and hormonal imbalance, other factors which aggravate acne are:

  • a diet rich in fats and starches;
  • intestinal stasis, especially constipation;
  • a sedentary life;
  • excessive use of greasy cosmetics, pomade, detergents and mechanical rubbing.

Acne vulgaris usually runs in families. Psychogenic stresses particularly the habit of picking pimples, makes them worse.

Did you know

Acne affects almost everyone - more than 90% of all adolescents, nearly 50% of all adult women and 25% of all adults. Crossing gender lines as well as national borders, it's one of the most widespread medical conditions in the world.

For most people with acne, it begins at puberty. This is when the body starts to produce hormones called androgens. Androgens cause the enlargement and overstimulation of the sebaceous glands in people with acne. Sensitivity to these androgens also cause acne to appear during the menstrual cycle and sometimes in pregnancy. The extra sebum (oil) that the sebaceous glands produce mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin's surface and this blocks pores. Inside the blocked pore, bacteria multiply and cause inflammation leading to the spots and pustules associated with acne.

Stress can also cause the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which can aggravate acne.

What is cortisol ?

Also know as strees hormone, Cortisol is a steroid hormone made in the adrenal glands, which are small glands adjacent to the kidneys. its important functions in the body include roles in the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular function as well as regulation of the body's use of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Cortisol secretion increases in response to any stress in the body, whether physical (such as illness, trauma, surgery, or temperature extremes) or psychological.

The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is a regular resident of all skin types; it's part of the skin's natural sebum maintenance system.

Once a follicle is plugged, Oil secretions build up beneath the plugged pore gets blocked , providing a perfect environment for the skin bacteria Propionibacterium acnes to multiply rapidly, creating the chemical reaction we know as inflammation in the follicle and surrounding skin.

When your body encounters unwanted bacteria, it sends an army of white blood cells to attack the intruders. This process is called chemotaxis; or, simply put, the inflammatory response. This is what causes pimples to become red, swollen and painful. The inflammatory response is different for everyone, but studies have shown that it is especially strong in adult women.
